A yeast infection is a common bacterial infection caused by a fungus known as candida albicans, which is normally found in small amounts in the vagina. The acidic environment in the vagina prevents yeast from growing. If the acidity of the vagina decereases, then too many yeast grow, causing vaginal infection. The acidity of the vagina can be changed due to menstruation period, pregnancy, intake of antibiotics, steroids, diabetes or birth control pills. Improper personal hygiene too is a primary cause of vaginal yeast infection.

Some of the most common symptoms of the infection are
1. Itching and burning sensation in the vagina
2. Odorless vaginal discharge
3. Swelling around the vulva
4. Urination burning sensation
5. Rash and soreness on outer surface of vagina

Many women feel embarrassed to go to a physician for vaginal yeast infection and prefer to cure this fungus infection using some tried and tested home remedy. Here are some home remedies that are used for yeast infection.

• Regularly daubing apple cider vinegar in the areas prone to this infection. This would stop the growth of infection. For people who face itching problems as well, the best option would be to steep garlic clove in the diluted apple cider vinegar.

• Prepare a solution by mixing 5 grams of Potassium Sorbate in a pint of water. Using a cotton tampon, insert it into the vagina and keep over night. Remove it in the morning.

• Having a glass of buttermilk every day, especially at night, is helpful in killing the yeast infection.

• Insert capsules of boric acid in the affected area, overnight, for several days. This is an effective way of treating yeast infection.

• Curd is an effective home remedy for yeast infection. Soak a cotton tampon in curd and insert in the vagina for 2-3 hour. Repeat the process 2-3 times a day.

• Prepare a mixture of olive leaf extract and grapefruit seed extract and add them to a glass of water. Use it to wash the affected area. This is an effective cure for treating yeast infection.

• Another effective treatment would be to have warm, salt hipbath.

• Applying honey externally on the affected area will be helpful in treating yeast infection. Keep it on for 15 minutes and then wash the area with warm water.

• Tea tree oil is commonly used as a home remedy for yeast infection. For this, dip a cotton tampon in tea tree oil and insert it at night, removing in the morning. Repeat the process for 3 to 4 days. This will reduce the vaginal pain and inflammation.

• Cut a few garlic pods in small thin pieces and wrap them in cheesecloth. Insert into the vagina for about 20 minutes, leaving part of cheesecloth hanging out for easy removal.

• Fill the bathtub with warm water and add a cup of vinegar to it. Soak the affected area in this bath solution for about 20 minutes. This is an effective way to cure yeast infection.

• Applying baby oil with aloe and vitamin E is likely to bring relief from irritation and itching.

• Olive oil is also used in curing yeast infection. Take 3-4 drops of olive oil and grapefruit juice and mix in two cups of water. Drink this mixture to get relief from yeast infection.

Precautions to Avoid Yeast Infection:

Prevention is better than cure. Taking these precautions will ensure that you do not suffer from vaginal yeast infection.

• Rinse underwear in plain hot water, use unscented detergents

• Do not use scented products when washing your body

• Cut down on sugar in your diet

• Wear underwear made only from natural fibres

• Avoid alcohol and steroids

• Women should wipe from front to back after going to the toilet

• Do not use spermicides or latex condoms, these can cause irritation

• Uncircumsized men should wash under their foreskin daily
